PACTCooking (Introductory & Intermediate)
Location: Artscape Youngplace, 180 Shaw Street in the lower level Sketch program area
Introductory Level: A delicious 8-week culinary trip around the world. Youth get an introduction to the kitchen and learn basic knife skills, kitchen safety, and introductory culinary techniques while working together to create a healthy affordable meal for the group and periodic guests such as funders each week. The program promotes cultural awareness, diversity and inclusiveness by exploring different international cuisines and regions of the world through food. Youth in the intro program also get volunteer hours and learn the importance of giving back by making extra food each class to be donated to a feeding program for seniors in the community.
Intermediate Level: For youth with some existing kitchen/cooking experience or building on the foundational skills they have obtained in the introductory PACTCooking project, the intermediate program will take things to the next level but also in a way back to the basics with more of a focus on knife skills and the use of advanced kitchen utensils, equipment and methods. Participants will become more independent, creative and confident in the kitchen as a whole. Weekly classes will teach youth how to make more involved menus that include such things as fresh pasta and baking as well as learning about the importance of the Mother Sauces as the basis of so many dishes.
