Youth in Care Canada

We're excited to be back after a short hiatus from our quarterly newsletters. YICC's new board has been working hard to plan tangible strategies to increase the voices of and advocacy for youth in/from care. We are pleased to bring you updates on our projects and visions for this year, which include: Community engagement and increased YICC presence; stakeholder and partnership outreach; and the dissemination and initiation of research projects in the field of child welfare.

YICO Project Re-Launch

This spring, we re-launched our Youth in Care Ontario (YICO) project. This project aims to investigate the needs and desires of youth in/from care in Ontario regarding a potential future province-wide network. Ontario is the only province without a network for youth in/from care and YICC is excited to build off our past successes establishing provincial networks to support the development of such an essential resource in Ontario.

Meet Gisell, our amazing and talented researcher for the project! See her bio below.

Gisell is a qualitative researcher who is passionate about social justice research.  She has worked on several projects that sought to explore, document and address the barriers many people face in striving to live a safe, healthy and balanced life.  For example, she worked on a narrative study of university student experiences, an evaluation of programing for youth involved with the legal system, and a needs assessment of newcomer women and their experiences with food safety, nutrition, and food security in Canada. Gisell also completed research in Nicaragua on community perceptions and understandings of domestic violence.  She worked with a team of dedicated Nicaraguan youth and remains inspired by the energy and insights they brought to the project.  She wishes to continue working with youth and youth-oriented organizations and is thrilled to be supporting the work of YICO. She looks forward to hearing and learning from youth in/from care across Ontario in the following months.
