February we celebrate Black History Month, dating back to 1926 in the United States. It was recognized in Canadian legislation in early 1970's. This year we recognize a strong Canadian female figure, Viola Desmond, who influenced racial segregation in 1946 after refusing to leave a 'white-only' area of the Roseland Theatre, Nova Scotia. In commemoration of this, she will be the first Canadian woman to appear on new $10 bill.

Pathways to Education, a program of Unison Health and Community Services, is a comprehensive program that helps students to finish high school and succeed in their future endeavours. We provide social, financial, academic and advocacy support to students.We have proven success:• In the Lawrence Heights Community (Allen Expressway & Lawrence Avenue West), “at-risk” students have decreased from 38.5% to 18.5% since the establishment of the program.

Weekly Intakes Available Classes are Monday to Friday: 10 am to 3 pm    EPE is an 8-week program free of cost for women and men receiving Ontario Works. It provides skills training and tools to build assets and abilities to enter the labour market. Also included is hands-on, in-house skills training plus 6-month post-program support. Post-hiring supports include gaining successful employment, job maintenance and retention.
